God and the sphere of communication
God speaks into the details, not just the big picture
1 Chronicles 28:19
“Every part of this plan,” David told Solomon, “was given to me in writing from the hand of the Lord.”
God communicates in ways people can actually grasp
Hebrews 1:1–2
Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. 2 And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe.
Test everything you hear; keep what's true
1 Thessalonians 5:19–21
Do not stifle the Holy Spirit. 20 Do not scoff at prophecies, 21 but test everything that is said. Hold on to what is good.
Verify before you share; be a trustworthy source
Luke 1:1–4
Many people have set out to write accounts about the events that have been fulfilled among us. 2 They used the eyewitness reports circulating among us from the early disciples. 3 Having carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I also have decided to write a careful account for you, most honorable Theophilus, 4 so you can be certain of the truth of everything you were taught.
Truth spoken with integrity changes lives
Colossians 1:6
This same Good News that came to you is going out all over the world. It is bearing fruit everywhere by changing lives, just as it changed your lives from the day you first heard and understood the truth about God’s wonderful grace.
Aim to give life with your words, not just data
John 20:30–31
The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book. 31 But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.
The purpose of communication
True words pull people together around a shared purpose
Zephaniah 3:9
Then I will purify the speech of all people, so that everyone can worship the Lord together.
Speak words that give life
Proverbs 10:11
The words of the godly are a life-giving fountain; the words of the wicked conceal violent intentions.
Honor every language and culture
Esther 8:9
So on June 25 the king’s secretaries were summoned, and a decree was written exactly as Mordecai dictated. It was sent to the Jews and to the highest officers, the governors, and the nobles of all the 127 provinces stretching from India to Ethiopia. The decree was written in the scripts and languages of all the peoples of the empire, including that of the Jews.
Share only what's reliable, and own your mistakes
2 Timothy 2:2
You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses.
Bring good news and comfort to the hurting
Isaiah 61:1–2
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed. 2 He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the Lord’s favor has come, and with it, the day of God’s anger against their enemies.
Communication to imitate
Speak under the inspiration of the Spirit
Matthew 22:43
Jesus responded, “Then why does David, speaking under the inspiration of the Spirit, call the Messiah ‘my Lord’?
Only speak with authority on what you actually live
Matthew 7:28–29
When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 for he taught with real authority—quite unlike their teachers of religious law.
Say what God is saying
Revelation 22:17
The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” Let anyone who hears this say, “Come.”
Speak the truth in love
Ephesians 4:15
Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.
Season your words with grace
Colossians 4:6
Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone.
Speak to build people up
1 Corinthians 14:26
When you meet together, one will sing, another will teach, another will tell some special revelation God has given, one will speak in tongues, and another will interpret what is said. But everything that is done must strengthen all of you.
Speak up for others; open doors with your words
Acts 9:27
Then Barnabas brought him to the apostles and told them how Saul had seen the Lord on the way to Damascus and how the Lord had spoken to Saul. He also told them that Saul had preached boldly in the name of Jesus in Damascus.
Master your tongue — it can build or burn
James 3:2–12
Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way. 3 We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. 4 And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. 5 In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. 6 And the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself. 7 People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, 8 but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. 9 Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. 10 And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right! 11 Does a spring of water bubble out with both fresh water and bitter water? 12 Does a fig tree produce olives, or a grapevine produce figs? No, and you can’t draw fresh water from a salty spring.
Seek and heed wise, timely advice
Proverbs 25:11
Timely advice is lovely, like golden apples in a silver basket.
Let reverence for God govern what you say
Ecclesiastes 12:9–13
Keep this in mind: The Teacher was considered wise, and he taught the people everything he knew. He listened carefully to many proverbs, studying and classifying them. 10 The Teacher sought to find just the right words to express truths clearly. 11 The words of the wise are like cattle prods—painful but helpful. Their collected sayings are like a nail-studded stick with which a shepherd drives the sheep. 12 But, my child, let me give you some further advice: Be careful, for writing books is endless, and much study wears you out. 13 That’s the whole story. Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone’s duty.
Keep your word — be faithful to your promises
Genesis 31:44–54
So come, let’s make a covenant, you and I, and it will be a witness to our commitment.” 45 So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a monument….“and see this monument I have set between us. 52 They stand between us as witnesses of our vows….
Communication to avoid
Never misrepresent who God is
Numbers 15:30
“But those who brazenly violate the Lord’s will, whether native-born Israelites or foreigners, have blasphemed the Lord, and they must be cut off from the community.
Never lie about your neighbor
Deuteronomy 5:20
“You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.
Don't take counsel from the wicked
Psalm 1:1
Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. 2 But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night.
Don't spread gossip
Proverbs 16:28
A troublemaker plants seeds of strife; gossip separates the best of friends.
Don't get pulled into pointless arguments
2 Timothy 2:23–25
Again I say, don’t get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. 24 A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people. 25 Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth.
Don't be a grumbler and complainer
Jude 1:16
These people are grumblers and complainers, living only to satisfy their desires. They brag loudly about themselves, and they flatter others to get what they want.
Refuse to slander or mock
Nehemiah 4:1–4
Sanballat was very angry when he learned that we were rebuilding the wall. He flew into a rage and mocked the Jews, 2 saying in front of his friends and the Samarian army officers, “What does this bunch of poor, feeble Jews think they’re doing? Do they think they can build the wall in a single day by just offering a few sacrifices? Do they actually think they can make something of stones from a rubbish heap—and charred ones at that?” 3 Tobiah the Ammonite, who was standing beside him, remarked, “That stone wall would collapse if even a fox walked along the top of it!” 4 Then I prayed, “Hear us, our God, for we are being mocked. May their scoffing fall back on their own heads, and may they themselves become captives in a foreign land!
Drop the prideful boasting
Psalm 75:4–5
“I warned the proud, ‘Stop your boasting!’ I told the wicked, ‘Don’t raise your fists! 5 Don’t raise your fists in defiance at the heavens or speak with such arrogance.’”
Pursue vertical communication with God
Listen carefully to God, or you'll drift
Hebrews 2:1–4
So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it. 2 For the message God delivered through angels has always stood firm, and every violation of the law and every act of disobedience was punished. 3 So what makes us think we can escape if we ignore this great salvation that was first announced by the Lord Jesus himself and then delivered to us by those who heard him speak? 4 And God confirmed the message by giving signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit whenever he chose.
God spoke the Word; we testify to the light
John 1:1–9
In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God,
God reveals his plans; we can know them
Amos 3:7
Indeed, the Sovereign Lord never does anything until he reveals his plans to his servants the prophets.
God listens when we cry out to him
Luke 18:35–43
...“What do you want me to do for you?” “Lord,” he said, “I want to see!” 42 And Jesus said, “All right, receive your sight! Your faith has healed you.”...
God answers; we can trust what he says
Judges 6:36–40
“If you are truly going to use me to rescue Israel as you promised, 37 prove it to me in this way. I will put a wool fleece on the threshing floor tonight. If the fleece is wet with dew in the morning but the ground is dry, then I will know that you are going to help me rescue Israel as you promised.” 38 And that is just what happened. When Gideon got up early the next morning, he squeezed the fleece and wrung out a whole bowlful of water.
God guides us; we can follow
Exodus 13:21–22
The Lord went ahead of them. He guided them during the day with a pillar of cloud, and he provided light at night with a pillar of fire. This allowed them to travel by day or by night. 22 And the Lord did not remove the pillar of cloud or pillar of fire from its place in front of the people.
Pursue horizontal communication with your neighbor
One-on-one: bless, don't curse — even an enemy
Romans 12:14
Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them.
Carry good news to the crowd
Isaiah 52:7
ow beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the messenger who brings good news, the good news of peace and salvation, the news that the God of Israel reigns!
Together, a community spreads the message far
Psalm 68:11
The Lord gives the word, and a great army brings the good news.
Speak up for those who have no voice
Proverbs 31:8–9
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed. 9 Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice.
Some things are better said face to face
2 John 1:12
I have much more to say to you, but I don’t want to do it with paper and ink. For I hope to visit you soon and talk with you face to face. Then our joy will be complete.
When danger's coming, sound the warning
Ezekiel 3:16–21
After seven days the Lord gave me a message. He said, 17 “Son of man, I have appointed you as a watchman for Israel. Whenever you receive a message from me, warn people immediately. 18 If I warn the wicked, saying, ‘You are under the penalty of death,’ but you fail to deliver the warning, they will die in their sins. And I will hold you responsible for their deaths. 19 If you warn them and they refuse to repent and keep on sinning, they will die in their sins. But you will have saved yourself because you obeyed me. 20 “If righteous people turn away from their righteous behavior and ignore the obstacles I put in their way, they will die. And if you do not warn them, they will die in their sins. None of their righteous acts will be remembered, and I will hold you responsible for their deaths. 21 But if you warn righteous people not to sin and they listen to you and do not sin, they will live, and you will have saved yourself, too.”
Spread good news and let it take root
Acts 19:17–20
The story of what happened spread quickly all through Ephesus, to Jews and Greeks alike. A solemn fear descended on the city, and the name of the Lord Jesus was greatly honored. 18 Many who became believers confessed their sinful practices. 19 A number of them who had been practicing sorcery brought their incantation books and burned them at a public bonfire. The value of the books was several million dollars. 20 So the message about the Lord spread widely and had a powerful effect.
Meet people where they are to reach them
1 Corinthians 9:19–23
….When I am with those who are weak, I share their weakness, for I want to bring the weak to Christ. Yes, I try to find common ground with everyone, doing everything I can to save some. 23 I do everything to spread the Good News and share in its blessings….
Know when to be quiet and when to speak
Ecclesiastes 3:7
A time to be quiet and a time to speak.
There's a right time to speak — and to hold back
Esther 2:10
Esther had not told anyone of her nationality and family background, because Mordecai had directed her not to do so.
Crossover passages
Speak a fitting blessing over each family member
Genesis 49:28
These are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said as he told his sons good-bye. He blessed each one with an appropriate message.
Never sell your voice to spread a lie
Matthew 28:15
So the guards accepted the bribe and said what they were told to say. Their story spread widely among the Jews, and they still tell it today.
Seek many advisers before you decide
Proverbs 15:22
Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many advisers bring success.
Before God, listen more than you speak
Ecclesiastes 5:1–7
As you enter the house of God, keep your ears open and your mouth shut. It is evil to make mindless offerings to God. 2 Don’t make rash promises, and don’t be hasty in bringing matters before God. After all, God is in heaven, and you are here on earth. So let your words be few. 3 Too much activity gives you restless dreams; too many words make you a fool. 4 When you make a promise to God, don’t delay in following through, for God takes no pleasure in fools. Keep all the promises you make to him. 5 It is better to say nothing than to make a promise and not keep it. 6 Don’t let your mouth make you sin. And don’t defend yourself by telling the Temple messenger that the promise you made was a mistake. That would make God angry, and he might wipe out everything you have achieved. 7 Talk is cheap, like daydreams and other useless activities. Fear God instead.
Tune your ears to wisdom and understanding
Proverbs 2:1–2
My child, listen to what I say, and treasure my commands. 2 Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding.
Good news spreads joy and draws others in
Esther 8:17
In every province and city, wherever the king’s decree arrived, the Jews rejoiced and had a great celebration and declared a public festival and holiday. And many of the people of the land became Jews themselves, for they feared what the Jews might do to them.
